Current News

June 2007

I finally (and sadly) finished my precious one year study with my great tutor Peter Adsett.  I thank Peter for his guidance to where my art is now and I thank Alice and Jonathan Wilson-Milne, from The Learning Connexion, for the scholarship. 

What an exhilarating journey...I now see art in a new way.  My own art is now more interesting and critical as it responds historically as well as culturally. What stood out for me from the course?

As evidenced from my stories corresponding to each pre-2007 artwork, I had always thought that I, as the artist, must tell the viewer what my artwork was about.  I now believe otherwise since I’ve learnt to respect my materials and let them ‘speak’ for me.  You only need to look at my new works to see for yourself, and the only title I now give my works is the date I completed them.  To reference the artwork to a title/story is ‘representation’ – a meaning to something that is already understood (and there is nothing wrong with that).   Unfortunately, most viewers still prefer a title so that they can relate to a work.  But how can we move art forward if we are always relating art to what is already understood? If we give our life to Art, then we shouldn’t be afraid to enter unknown ground.
